A typical process of cement clinker manufacture consists of three stages; grinding a mixture of limestone and clay or shale to make a fine rawmix, heating the rawmix to sintering temperature in a rotary kiln, grinding the resulting clinker with additives (usually gypsum) to make cement.

Rotary Kiln

Cement kilns are used for the pyroprocessing stage of hydraulic cement manufacture, in which ground raw material mixture under elevated heat to form the clinker, which is the main component of cement.
